What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a new mandatory pre-travel requirement for nationals of visa-exempt countries wishing to visit the European Union, the Schengen Area, and associated countries. It is not a visa — it is an electronic travel authorisation linked to your passport.

Once approved, ETIAS will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and will allow multiple short stays in participating European countries of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

ETIAS is coming soon

The ETIAS system is expected to launch in late 2026. Visit ETA Permits to find out more and prepare your application in advance.

Who will need an ETIAS?

ETIAS will be required for nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the European Union and Schengen Area — including travellers from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and many others.

Citizens of EU member states and those who already require a Schengen visa will not need an ETIAS.

Not sure if you will need one? Visit ETA Permits and click Your Journey Begins Here — you can select your nationality from the dropdown on the application page to check instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Which countries will require ETIAS?
ETIAS will be required to enter EU member states and Schengen Area countries including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, and many more — over 30 countries in total.
Will UK citizens need an ETIAS after Brexit?
Yes. Following Brexit, British nationals are no longer EU citizens and will require an ETIAS to visit EU and Schengen Area countries for short stays, just like travellers from the US, Canada, and Australia.
How long will ETIAS take to process?
The majority of ETIAS applications are expected to be processed within minutes or a few hours. In some cases it may take up to 30 days if additional information is required. We recommend applying well in advance of travel.
Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation for people who do not currently need a visa to visit the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa is a separate requirement for nationals of countries that do not currently have visa-free access to the EU.
How much will ETIAS cost?
The official EU fee for ETIAS is €7 for applicants aged 18 to 70. ETA Permits charges a service fee for handling and reviewing your application. Full pricing is available on our website.
Can I apply for ETIAS for my whole family?
Yes. Each traveller requires their own individual ETIAS. ETA Permits accepts family applications and our team reviews all submissions together before they are submitted.
